Territory
Australia is divided between two Coptic Orthodox dioceses. The Diocese of Melbourne covers Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory, with New Zealand and Fiji; the Diocese of Sydney covers New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory, with the affiliated regions in Asia. The Patriarchate's listing of dioceses names the Sydney diocese as the Diocese of Sydney, Australia, under Bishop Daniel.
The diocese's own directory lists 31 churches. Seventeen are in New South Wales, among them the St Mary and St Mina Cathedral in Bexley, the only church the directory calls a cathedral, and parishes in Newcastle, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga as well as in Sydney. Six are in Queensland, including a monastery of St Mary and St Anthony at Kooralbyn, and one is in Darwin. The remaining seven are the affiliated regions: churches in Hong Kong, Seoul, Malacca, Taiwan, Singapore, Bangkok and Japan.
History
The Diocese of Melbourne was organised in 1999, and the Sydney diocese in 2002. Bishop Daniel's own account on the diocesan website records that he was ordained Bishop for Sydney and its Affiliated Regions by Pope Shenouda III on 23 June 2002. Before that he had been General Vicar of the Diocese of Khartoum and Affiliated Regions from 1997 to 2000, and General Vicar for the Diocese of Ireland, Scotland and the United Kingdom from June 2000 to June 2002.

The bishop
Bishop Daniel was born in Atbara, Sudan, on 7 March 1959. He graduated in civil engineering from Alexandria University in 1982 and holds a master's degree in church history from the College of Coptic Studies in Cairo. He was ordained a monk at St Anthony's Monastery by the Red Sea on 5 August 1984, served at St Mary's Cathedral in Khartoum from February 1986, and held the two vicariates named above before his ordination as bishop.
Education and services
St Cyril's Coptic Orthodox Theological College, in Carlton in southern Sydney, describes itself as a tertiary provider of theological education in the tradition of the Orthodox Church, established in 1982. It is a member institution of the Sydney College of Divinity and offers accredited degrees through it, from a Diploma of Christian Studies and a Bachelor of Theology to master's degrees and doctoral research; its accredited theology degrees may be studied entirely online. The diocese's website records that students of the college graduated on 14 March 2026 at a ceremony held at the University of Sydney's Great Hall.
Public life
The diocese's website records its civic and inter-faith engagements. In the first months of 2026 these included a Coptic Opening of the Law Term, a gathering of judges, magistrates, barristers, politicians and clergy that the diocese hosted; a visit by the diocese to a synagogue; an evening at Admiralty House; and the New South Wales Premier's Harmony Dinner.
